Network Route Lab

A network can deliver the same data along different paths. Choose a route, add its link delays and investigate what happens when a connection fails.

Packets travel through networks

Networks use protocols to exchange data. A route moves information through intermediate devices; a hop is a step from one device to another. Latency is delay, not download speed. This simplified model only adds made-up one-way link delays; it does not simulate congestion, queueing, processing, retransmission or routing protocols.

Choose a path from A to D

The links have fictional one-way delays: A–B 14 ms, B–D 19 ms, A–C 11 ms, C–D 26 ms, B–C 7 ms.

Internet or World Wide Web?

The Internet is the global network infrastructure. The Web is a service that uses it to access linked resources. Other Internet services include email and online games.
