Options after GCSE

Sixth form or college

A-level choices may include Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or other subjects that fit your interests. Check what future courses actually require; Computer Science A-level is not a universal entry condition.

Technical education

Vocational qualifications and T Levels can include technical projects and industry experience. Availability and entry criteria depend on the provider.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships combine paid work with training, with levels suited to different qualifications. In England, the government search service lists current vacancies. Other UK nations use their own services.

Independent portfolio

A GitHub repository, a simple data report, an accessible website or an explained Python project gives you a way to show your thinking. Protect personal information and check the terms of any platform you use.

Options after A-level or equivalent study

Routes may include university degrees, degree or higher apprenticeships, employment with training, and specialist qualifications. Your choices depend on the role: data science often uses more statistics; UX design may place greater weight on prototypes and research; software engineering values tested, maintained code.

Ask these five questions

  1. Which modules or practical skills will I actually learn?
  2. What grades or subject combinations does this specific course require?
  3. Is there a placement, apprenticeship or real-world project?
  4. How will I pay for study or training, and what support is available?
  5. Can I speak to current students, apprentices or early-career professionals?

Reliable starting points

Apprenticeships and school qualifications differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Confirm information with the relevant national service.
